For 4th consecutive year, Coatepeque Lake changes color and turns turquoise to amaze salvadorans and travelers visiting our country.

So far the national authorities have not been able to explain the reason for this majestic natural phenomenon and explain why this volcanic lake suddenly changes color.

Coatepeque or “ The hill of the snakes” by its meaning in Nahuat is a surface water inside a volcanic caldera in the west of El Salvador, the lake is the result of an explosive eruption thousand years ago. Many people live around dedicated to the tourism, fishing and agriculture, is a popular destination for local and foreign people attracted by the beautiful landscapes of the lake and the Santa Ana volcano in the background, the particular scene made  the destination was named  as the 2nd Eight Natural Wonder of the world.

Since 1998, the lake has a mysterious change of color in the water which has been a discussion among the experts whom have not given an exactly explanation, apparently the change is due the presence of substances that avoid the sunlight penetrates with the same intensity in the water producing an impressive turquoise surface temporarily; even though the phenomenon used to happens rarely in the past, for any unknown reason  this is the fourth consecutive year when the nature allow us appreciate this wonderful spectacle.

One thing is for sure, this natural curiosity is without a doubt wonderful. Come and visit this impressive unique natural spectacle in its greatest splendor!
