The “Cacao” tree is a tropical and endemic tree grown all over South and Central America. Our cacao was cultivated in El Salvador by Mayan ancestors. Cacao, was considered a sacred food also known as, the “food for the gods” and was a sign of prestige and wisdom. It quickly became the force of pre-columbian economy.
The genetic quality of the Cacao cultivated by the indigenous in El Salvador is named “Criollo” and it is considered the best one of all the breeds.
Cacao plantations were extended along the salvadorean territory until the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores. When the Spanish began taking over the land, the indigenous population decreased, along with the production of cacao. The Spanish moved the remaining of the cacao plantation to the city Sonsonate and Izalco.
